The next Newsmaker event will feature Susan Pond, Head of Defense Cooperation, NATO,
and Lt. Gen. (Ret.) Nicholas B. Kehoe, Board Member of The Fund for Peace
at The National Press Club on Tuesday, May 20, 2003 at 10 AM,
529 14th Street, NW, 13th floor.
Ms. Pond is section chief on Partnership for Peace Trust Fund
activities throughout the former Soviet Union and Russia on the
destruction of landmines, small arms and munitions as part of a larger
Trust Fund initiative to stabilize regions, strengthen civil society and
promote transparency and the value of these activities internationally.
As you are probably aware, NATO has managed a series of small
demilitarization projects in Albania, Georgia, Moldova and
Ukraine with numerous others currently in planning.
One such project is the largest demilitarization project ever - The Fund
for Peace is currently engaged in working with NATO to support the
destruction of 1.5 million small arms and 133,000 tons of munitions.
The feasibility study has been concluded and will be presented to the
lead donor countries of Greece, Turkey and Germany in early June.
Lord Robertson announced the Ukraine project on May 5 during his keynote
address to a conference on Ukraine attended by Secretary Rumsfeld as
well as Defense Ministers of the 18 member countries.
